I always feel I should begin picture book features with, ‘Once upon a time‘…
Each time my son reads a book; it is an adventure that he can hold in his hands. At five years old he is hesitantly putting his little toe into reading by himself, on mummys lap of course. It is magic. He stands on his stool, reaches up to his bookshelf and picks our bedtime story each night, where he finds fun and friendship in the pages.
We watch our children grow with each blink of our eyes; there are so many happy moments, so many milestones; birthdays, new siblings, moving house alongside fears, praise and love.
Do you have something special to say? Come and create it the story telling way!
Acclaimed children’s author Tom Percival and illustrator Tuire Siirainen have teamed up to create ‘Message in a bottle’, a children’s book made unique by taking your personal message to your little one and weaving it into the story; their name, address and country appearing throughout the pages of the book. You can even add a picture, photo or drawing!
A lovable, very special bird named Kiki finds a bottle washed up on a beach on the other side of the world. She bravely sets off on an adventure from the shores of Hawaii to deliver the mysterious, heartfelt message to your child. The book is about them, made for them. It is fun, educational and packed full of some amazing animals and places that lets your child follow Kiki’s progress across the globe to their own home highlighted on the world map. Along the way she teaches your little one about kindness, about being brave and not giving up.
I would have loved to have made this for when my son started school, to offer him reassurance and as a treasured memory for us both.
Message in a Bottle will be a 40-page, high-quality full colour book printed in the UK. The book is scheduled to finish by July of this year and be shipped to backers in August.
Being part of the launch team for this beautifully designed, traditional picture book has been a humbling experience; being part of a story that makes a story. Not only do I love the concept, I love that the enthusiastic team of professionals involved in creating the book is so responsive to suggestions, are so passionate about making it the best it can be, putting their heart and soul into the pages.
Storytelling for me is as much about pictures as it is words, I think it is something we loose out on as adults…The very talented Tuire’s illustrations are captivating, with vibrant colours that are lovingly and carefully considered. The artist in me purrs like a kitten and the mummy in me melts at my son’s response when I show my son the new stills. Being part of the launch team is very much a family activity and in watching the book and its characters come to life Kiki has become a much loved character in our house.
